View from The Avery Tract, Waterford
From the Avery Tract visitors can hike trails near the Thames River and enjoy views of this important estuary. Visitors should keep in mind that at the end of the red trail (described on The Avery Tract), they can step out of the woods and enjoy views of the River, but due to increased security measures at the nearby U.S. submarine base, it is crucial for visitors not to linger in the area, and they should definitely not take pictures! Parking is available for approximately eight vehicles on either side of Scotch Cap Road (right before the crest of a hill). There are signs on-site for the West Farms Land Trust and for hiking trails, and map boxes exist as well. Use of motorized vehicles on the trails is prohibited, and hunting, trapping, tree cutting, and fires are also prohibited.

Multiple trails exist on this property, and cover an area much larger than what one observes upon approaching the entrance on Scotch Cap Road. The woods abut railroad tracks, which, in turn, abut the Thames River. As such, the property gives visual access to the river, but does not abut the river itself, so please do not cross the railroad tracks to attempt to physically access the river. Visitors should follow marked trees to remain on-path, and proper footwear attire is necessary, in order to traverse rocky, unimproved trails. Please check out The Avery Tract for more information about the site.

Then, turn right onto Scotch Cap Road and proceed an extremely short distance (approximately .1 mile). Access to the site is on the left before the crest of a hill (look for a wooded parcel after the last single-family, detached residence, but before the recently constructed condominium complex, in order to find the obscured entrance).
