| There are three ways to search: |
| Search the Archives box on the left menu bar matches words
or names to the subject, title or author fields. Results include matches for any part of the field being searched. |
| Advanced Search gives more opportunities to specify which fields to search
and the the option to combine the search criteria. The archive can be searched by author, subject, taxonomy,
a year or a range of years, and location. Searches can be done on a single field or by a combination of fields.

| Location Search allows you to pick a location on a map. Use the Map Tools to find a location. |
| Map Tools |
 | Zoom in | Zoom in to a specific location on the map. Select this tool with the mouse. Either select on the map where to zoom in or drag a rectangle around the area to zoom in. |
 | Zoom out | Zoom out from a specific location on the map. Select this tool with the mouse. Either select on the map where to zoom out from or drag a rectangle around the area to zoom out from. |
 | Center Zoom in | Zoom in to the center of the current map. Select this tool with the mouse and the map will automatically zoom in. Repeatedly select this tool to continue zooming in. |
 | Center Zoom out | Zoom out from the center of the current map. Select this tool with the mouse and the map will automatically zoom out. Repeatedly select this tool to continue zooming out. |
 | Pan | Move (re-center) the map. Select this tool with the mouse. Either select on the map and the map will center on that point or select on the map and drag it to reposition the map center. |
 | Full View | Zooms out to the full viewing area. |
 | Search | Finds information associated with a location on the map. Select this tool with the mouse, then select location on the map for which information is desired. |
| Map Panning |
 | Pan North | Select this arrow with the mouse to pan the map north. |
 | Pan South | Select this arrow with the mouse to pan the map south. |
 | Pan East | Select this arrow with the mouse to pan the map east. |
 | Pan West | Select this arrow with the mouse to pan the map west. |
| Map Scale |
| Scale 1:24,000 | Select map scale from list and map will redraw at the choosen scale. |
| Tips on Searching: |
| Searches are inclusive. Results include matches for any part of the field being searched.
or example, the results for a search on sediment will include documents related to marine
sediments, sediment distribution, estuarine sediments, sediments, and more. |
| Capitalization is irrelevant. For example, USGS is equivalent to usgs. |
| Authors names should be search for by last name, first name. For example, Smith, John instead of John Smith. |
| Taxonomic searching is by species. For example, americanus rather than Homarus americanus. |
| Phrase searching, enclosing the words within double quotes is not supported. |
| The use of wildcards like * to increase the scope of a search is not supported. |
